Washington County Senior Nutrition Program

Provides meals to persons aged 60 and over in a congregate setting to ensure a nutritionally balanced diet and to provide opportunity for socialization.

About the Program

The Senior Nutrition Program meal meets one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances for the Elderly and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Dietary Guidelines and provides nutrition education and nutrition screening. The Nutrition Screen is a component of the National Aging Program Information System. The Nutrition Programs for Elderly is the only community nutrition program in the state that screens for malnutrition.

Cash is provided to states for meals for senior citizens. The food purchased with those funds is served in senior citizen centers or delivered by meals-on-wheels programs and is supplemented by volunteers and state and local funds.

You may be eligible to receive meals under this program if you are over 60.

Another nutrition program, which an elderly person might be entitled to, is the Commodity Supplemental Food Programs located in some counties. This is a means tested program, which provides forty pounds of United States Department of Agriculture Commodities monthly.
