How The Victim/Witness Assistance Program Can Help You

Our Victim Advocates are here to make sure our crime victims have their voices heard and are treated fairly and respectfully. We are here to help through each stage of the process. Below, see a brief description of our services:

  • Initially, depending on the crime, we may be called to the scene to offer comfort and to explain what is happening and what will happen next. Our first priority is to make sure you are safe. We will not leave you until your safety is ensured and a friend or family member has arrived so you are not alone.
  • Later, we can determine if you qualify for victim's compensation. Victim's compensation is available to cover medical bills, counseling, lost wages, damage done to your home, and more. The money to establish the victim's compensation fund comes from Court assessment fees against convicted criminals.
  • Also, we will keep you informed throughout the entire criminal justice process with the help of the District Attorney's Victim-Witness Coordinators. Your wishes will be very important to the prosecutor and to the judge, so they will want to know what your feelings are. In some circumstances you may be asked to testify in court - a very stressful task - so once again we will be available to offer support.
  • Of course, if you do not wish to be contacted by Victim's Assistance or to take any part in the process, your wishes will be respected. That is completely up to you.
  • Lastly, our services also include helping you to fill out the necessary paperwork to file a protection order. Now, it is important to know you can't just file a protection order against someone you find frustrating or annoying. The key word here is "imminent danger" - you must feel that your health or even your life is seriously threatened by this person. Once you have filed a protection order, I will accompany you to a hearing before a judge, in which the other person will be able to have their say as well. There the judge will decide to either grant or deny the protection order and will line out the specific terms.
  • Once again, Washington County Victim Services is here to help. Know that you are not alone and your voice will be heard!
